Veterans Affairs disability rates had a cost of living adjustment in 2022 at 5.9%, which is the same as the increase in Social Security benefits. This COLA is determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers .
The CPI-W measures the average change over time in prices paid by urban consumers for a fixed market basket of goods and services. The COLA is important because it ensures that VA disability rates keep up with the cost of living. In addition, it helps to protect veterans purchasing power.

Disabled Veterans Military Retirees See Record Cola Increase
Disabled veterans and military retirees will see an 8.7% increase in their Social Security benefits for 2023.
On average, Social Security benefits will increase by more than $140 per month starting in January, according to the Social Security Administration. This is the largest annual adjustment to the federalCost of Living Allowance due to inflationsince 1981.
Veterans will see increases in compensation rates for certain Department of Veterans Affairs benefits, including disability benefits and dependency and indemnity benefits.
The increase will go into effect on Dec. 1, 2022. This increase in compensation and benefits, the largest in more than four decades, will provide critical financial help to our veterans and their families during these challenging times,Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va., said in a statement.We have an obligation as a nation to take care of our veterans.
What Is The Effective Date Of Va Disability Rates 2023
The new VA disability rates 2023 will be effective December 1, 2022.
Disabled veterans will get an 8.7% COLA increase starting on their January 1, 2023 VA compensation payment.
For example, if you were previously getting $1,000 per month tax-free, an 8.9% VA pay increase is $89, so a veterans VA disability compensation pay in 2023 would go up to $1,089 per month.

Update:2023 VA Pay Increase Biggest in 30 Years
Veterans receiving VA disability compensation are set to see their monthly VA pay increase by 5.9% in 2022. To put that in dollars, for every $1,000 a veteran currently receives in benefits payments, they will see an additional $59 in 2022. Spouses and family members receiving survivor benefits will see the same increase in their monthly payments.
Here at the Rep for Vets, we have long felt that VA payments are not keeping up with the increasing cost of living. The annual cost of living adjustment has averaged around 1.5% for the last 10 years, so this years increase of 5.9% is good news for veterans.

Starting this January, veterans will get the same cost of living increase in their benefits payouts that Social Security recipients get. Thats thanks to passage of the Veterans Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act, a rare bipartisan success story.
The 2022 compensation bump is no doubt driven by inflation . But its more than just a rate adjustment tied to inflation. It represents a quality of life guarantee for veterans who served honorably and are now dealing with service-connected disabilities that make it hard to work and provide.

Calculating Multiple Va Disability Ratings
The VA uses a special method for calculating multiple disabilities.
Here is a simplified example:
Example: If you have a 30% disability rating, the VA would multiply that against 100%, which is assumed to be good health. This gives you 30%. Subtract that from 100% which leaves you with 70% . Then subtract 70% from 100% and you are left with 30%. If that is your only disability, then your final VA Service-Connected Disability Rating is 30%.
If you have multiple ratings, you continue with the process, using your final number each time as your starting point. Continuing with our example, if your next rating is 10%, you would multiply 10% against 70%, which is 7%. You subtract that from 70%, which leaves you with 63%. Subtract 63% from 100% and you get 37%. Your disability rating is 37%, which rounds up to 40%.

The Va Disability Rating System
The Department of Veterans Affairs uses a rating system to determine a veterans level of disability on a scale from 0% to 100%. This rating is used to determine the veterans monthly compensation payment. The rating also determines eligibility for other benefits, such as health care and education.
The VA Disability Rating System is based on the percentage of service-connected disabilities a veteran has. The VA Rating Board, which comprises medical professionals, can determine this percentage.
The Rating Board assigns a disability rating based on how a veterans medical condition affects his or her ability to work.
The VA Disability Rating System is complex, and many factors are considered. Some factors considered include the type of medical condition, its severity, and how it impacts the veterans ability to work. To qualify for a disability rating, a veterans medical condition must be considered service-related.
Will Disabled Veterans Get A Raise In 2022
When VA applies the 2022 COLA to disability benefits, veterans will see a significant increase reflected in their monthly compensation come December, especially when compared to the 2021 adjustment of 1.3 percent.
As the COLA rate has increased to 5.9 percent, veterans with a 100 percent disability rating and no dependents will receive an extra $185.64, yielding a total of $3,332.06 a month.

How The Cola Is Determined
Each year, military retirement pay, Survivor Benefit Plan Annuities, VA Compensation and Pensions, and Social Security benefits are adjusted for the rate of inflation.
The Department of Labor determines the annual COLA by measuring the Consumer Price Index , a measurement of a broad sampling of the cost of consumer goods and expenses. The CPI is compared to the previous year if there is an increase, there is a COLA. If there is no increase, there is no COLA benefits will remain the same – not decrease.
The COLA increase affects about one in every five Americans.
What Factors Determine My Va Disability Rating
The VA follows the rules of the VAs Schedule for Rating Disabilities to assign rating percentages to veterans conditions.
The VASRD is the official rating chart for VA disability based on their medical diagnosis by diagnostic code and severity of symptoms in terms of frequency, severity, and duration.
- Frequency means how often.
Generally, the more severe your symptoms, the higher your rating will be for that condition.

The New Va Disability Rates As Of 2022
For the calendar year of 2022, a 100 percent disabled veteran with no spouse, children, or dependent parents will now receive VA disability benefits of $3,332.06 per month. If that same veteran has a dependent spouse, the 2022 monthly benefit will be $3,517.84. In that situation, the benefits can get increased by $170 a month for a spouse receiving Aid and Attendance.
A 100 percent disabled veteran with a dependent spouse and child can now receive $3,653.89 per month. Each additional child under the age of 18 in this situation can increase the monthly check by 92 dollars. Additional children over the age of 18 in a qualifying school program can increase the check by $198 per month.

Start with the Basic SMC rates table. Find the dependent status in the left column that best describes you. Then find your SMC letter designation in the top row. Your monthly basic rate is where your dependent status and SMC letter meet.
If you have more than one child or your spouse receives Aid and Attendance benefits, be sure to also check the Added amounts table, and add these to your amount from the Basic SMC rates table.

Who Should I Contact If I Have Questions About My Disability Rating
There are many organizations that specialize in helping veterans with their benefits and claims.
The first place to start is with the VA. VA representatives have access to your records and are the best source for up-to-date information.
However, the VA isnt always the best place to get assistance with your claim, especially if you are filing an appeal after the VA denied your claim. In that case, I recommend contacting a veteran benefits counselor at your county VA office, or an organization such as the DAV, AMVETS, VFW, American Legion, or a similar Veteran Service Organization.
You can also use the Physical Evaluation Board Forum to anonymously ask questions about VA disabilities, ratings and the military medical board process.
If that doesnt work, consider hiring a lawyer that specializes in VA disability claims. I dont have any specific recommendations for lawyers, so please do your research before hiring a law office to represent you. At the minimum, you will want to ensure they specialize in military law, VA disability claims, social security disability claims, or similar types of law. As with all legal agreements, also make sure you understand the compensation structure.

Va Special Monthly Compensation Rates For 2022
Based on the COLA increase of 5.9 percent, veterans will see an increase in VA SMC rates come December 2021. The 2021 SMC rates can be used as a baseline to calculate estimates for 2022 VA SMC rates. Take the 2022 COLA of 5.9 percent, multiply it by the 2021 SMC compensation rate, and then add that number to the rate. This adjusted figure is your 2022 VA monthly payment.
The table below shows the 2022 VA special monthly compensation rates for a single veteran without any dependents:

It is also important to note that veterans may qualify for higher special monthly compensation rates if they have eligible dependents. Eligible dependents include:
- Children under the age of 18
- Children between the age of 18 and 23 who are in school
- A child who was permanently disabled before the age of 18
Dependency And Indemnity Compensation
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation is a monthly benefit paid to eligible survivors of military members who died in the line of duty or as a result of injuries or illnesses received while on active duty. Eligibility for DIC also extends to veterans whose death was due to any cause but who were entitled to receive VA compensation for the service-connected disability at the time of death.
Spouses and unmarried children of military members who die in the line of duty are automatically entitled to receive DIC. For veterans whose death was not in the line of duty, DIC eligibility is based on whether the veteran was receiving VA compensation for a service-connected disability at the time of death.
If the veteran was not receiving VA compensation for a service-connected disability at the time of death, but was receiving or entitled to receive VA pension benefits, DIC eligibility is based on whether the veteran was permanently and totally disabled at the time of death.
DIC payments are a tax-free benefit and are not subject to federal income tax.
