For each of the major body systems, we maintain a list of medical conditions we consider severe enough to prevent a person from doing SGA. As of September 2022, we are increasing rates for ODSP by 5%.
This 5% increase applies to:
- singles and families:
- basic needs and shelter maximums
- board and lodge amounts
This increase means that if you are a single person receiving $1,169 a month from ODSP for basic needs and shelter, your ODSP payment would go up to $1,228 a month in September.
We will also tie future annual ODSP rate increases to inflation.

Division Of Disability Benefits
The Ohio OOD Division of Disability Determination , in agreement with the Social Security Administration , determines medical eligibility for Ohioans who apply for Social Security disability benefits. Benefits include:
- Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to an individual and certain family members if the individual is “insured”
- Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need.
Disability, under the SSA, is based on an individuals inability to work. SSA uses the same definition for both benefit types. What’s The Difference Between Social Security Disability Insurance And Supplemental Security Income
While SSDI is an earned benefit based on Social Security taxes you’ve paid in during your career, you can receive SSI payments without ever having worked.
Both SSDI and SSI pay benefits to people that the Social Security Administration determines have physical or mental disabilities severe enough to prevent them from engaging in “substantial gainful activity” for at least a year or that are expected to end in their death.
The Social Security Administration generally uses the same medical criteria to determine if a disability entitles an adult to SSDI or SSI and collecting both benefits is allowed.
SSDI is an earned benefit. As with retirement benefits, it comes from paying Social Security taxes during the course of your employment. In 2022, the estimated average monthly SSDI benefit was $1,358.

The Basics About Disability Benefits
The SSDI program pays benefits to you and certain if you are insured. This means that you worked long enough and recently enough – and paid Social Security taxes on your earnings. The SSI program pays benefits to adults and children who meet our requirements for a qualifying disability and have limited income and resources.

What Happens If The Dac Gets Married
If the child receives benefits as a DAC, the benefits generally end if they get married. However, some marriages are considered protected.

Adults With A Disability That Began Before Age 22
An adult who has a disability that began before age 22 may be eligible for benefits if their parent is deceased or starts receiving retirement or disability benefits. We consider this a “child’s” benefit because it is paid on a parent’s Social Security earnings record.
The Disabled Adult Child who may be an adopted child, or, in some cases, a stepchild, grandchild, or step grandchild must be unmarried, age 18 or older, have a qualified disability that started before age 22, and meet the definition of disability for adults.

It is not necessary that the DAC ever worked. Benefits are paid based on the parent’s earnings record.
- A DAC must not have substantial earnings. The amount of earnings we consider substantial increases each year. In 2022, this means working and earning more than $1,350 a month.

Apply For Benefits Online
You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you develop a disability. Follow these easy steps to apply online for disability:
- To start your application, go to our Apply for Benefits page, and read and agree to the Terms of Service. Click Next.
- On that page, review the Getting Ready section to make sure you have the information you need to apply.
- Select Start A New Application.
- We will ask a few questions about who is filling out the application.
- You will then sign in to your personal mySocial Security account, or you will be prompted to create one.
- Complete the application.
You can use the online application to apply for disability benefits if you:
- Are age 18 or older.
- Are not currently receiving benefits on your own Social Security record.
- Are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
- Have not been denied for disability in the last 60 days.
Note: If your application was recently denied, our application is a starting point to request a review of the determination we made.
You may be able to file online for SSI at the same time that you file for SSDI benefits. Once you complete the online process described above, a Social Security representative will contact you if we need additional information.
Meet Evelyne And Joan
Evelyne is the caregiver to her mother, Joan, who lives with her.
For years, Joan was able to manage on her own despite having a progressive medical condition. Gradually her condition began to worsen such that she struggles to walk, dress and feed herself.
Evelyne applied for the disability tax credit for her mother. As a result of the information provided by the medical practitioner on the DTC application form, Joan is now eligible for DTC and she qualifies under the category of cumulative effect of significant limitations. Joan needs constant care and supervision.
As Joan has little taxable income and her daughter helps with her food, clothing, and shelter throughout the year, Evelyne may claim any unused portion of the tax credit.
Since Joan is eligible for the DTC, she may also be eligible for other government programs for persons with disabilities.

What Do You Do If Your Doctor Doesnt Support You
It may just mean that your doctor needs more convincing. You should discuss your concerns with the doctor and do everything the doctor recommends to improve your symptoms and ability to work. Many doctors will support you once they believe you have done everything possible to try and remain employed.
In rare cases, you may have a biased or uninformed doctor. Some doctors have personal beliefs and biases against people who need to apply for disability benefits. Dont assume this is the case with your doctor just because they are reluctant to support you give your doctor the benefit of the doubt.
However, if you have gone to great lengths to show the doctor you are, in fact, unable to work and they still arent supportive, you may have to switch to a new doctor. Changing doctors must be a last resort the simple fact that you changed doctors will be a red flag for the new doctor and also the disability benefits plans. They may think you are trying to manipulate the system.

How Do I Apply For Social Security Disability Insurance
Less than half of disability applicants are accepted on their first try.
You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. You can apply online, by calling 800-772-1213 or in person at your local Social Security office. Whichever route you go, you’ll want to have the extensive documentation required at the ready — including detailed information about your condition and recent employment history.
To qualify for disability you cannot already be receiving Social Security benefits and must not have been denied disability benefits in the past 60 days. When you apply, be patient: A majority of disability claims are denied at first and the appeals process can take months — or even years — to resolve.
Even getting a preliminary decision on your application takes more than five months on average, according to AARP.
