State Commission Wants To Figure Out How To Increase Employment For Individuals With Disabilities
Earlier this month, the Disability Employment Subcommittee of the state Commission on the Status of Persons with Disabilities met to analyze initiatives that increase job opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Subcommittee member Carl Richardson, who identifies as deafblind and serves as the Statehouses Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator, said his resumé always got him the interview when he was on the job hunt, but what followed after the interview was when things took a turn.
The only thing they could focus on was how am I going to get to work every day? Richardson said. And I actually said to them, You know what? Its not your concern whether I can get to work every day. Its your concern whether I can do the job. I blew the interview because of that.
Of the 62,000 workplace discrimination charges filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over the pandemic, 66% were disability-related. The lawsuits alleged employers had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Myth: Hiring A Person With A Disability Is A Financial Or Legal Risk To The Employer
Truth: Hiring a person with a disability does not cost more than hiring a person without a disability . Wages are the same for all employees who are doing the same or similar jobs, and employment benefits do not cost more for a person with a disability than for any other employee. Just as an employer need not take out a special policy when they hire someone who, for example, wears glasses or has high cholesterol, there is no additional liability the employer needs to plan for when they hire a person with a disability. Additionally, according to a recent Job Accommodation Network survey , most employers report that the accommodations they have made for employees with disabilities were low- or no-cost to the organization. In fact, workplace modifications put in place to support employees with disabilities have increased productivity for all workers, resulting in improved morale throughout the entire company .
New York Employment Services System
The New York Employment Services System is a comprehensive employment system that provides New Yorkers with a single point of access to employment services and related supports. In addition, NYESS is a statewide Administrative Employment Network whereby a Social Security beneficiary can assign their Ticket to Work to NYESS and access employment services from a variety of providers, including many NYS Career Centers, throughout New York State that are participating in the NYESS Administrative Employment Network .
NYESS works in partnership with the New York State Department of Labor to provide New Yorkers with a single point to access all employment-related services and support, including job matching with the approximately 90,000 jobs currently posted by businesses in the NYS Job Bank. Nys Justice Center For The Protection Of People With Special Needs And The Technology
The New York State Justice Center provides oversight of the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Program. There are 12 Regional TRAID Centers in New York State. Their activities include:

Myth: People With Disabilities Cant Work Because Of Their Social Security Benefits
Truth: Of all the myths regarding disability and employment, this one remains the biggest barrier. It just isnt true. Individuals with disabilities who are competitively employed will always take home more money than if they just collected benefits alone. For every dollar they earn, their Supplemental Security Income benefits are only cut by about fifty cents . Additionally, many people wrongly assume that if they no longer receive their SSI cash benefit, they will also risk losing their Medicaid coverage. The specifics vary from state to state, but there are many options for workers with disabilities to keep their Medicaid coverage if their earnings mean that they are no longer eligible for SSI cash benefits. Lastly, it is often said that relying on SSI benefits just feels like a safer, more reliable bet than employment. This is a dangerous assumption to make.
