Does The Vfw Really Help Veterans

DAV 2020-2021 Year-In-Review

We exist to provide financial resources to the vital assistance programs of the VFW. Through our strategic relationships with supporters, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation fills in governmental assistance gaps for troops abroad, military families back in the U.S. and Americas often-forgotten veterans.

Membership And Veterans Services Questions

Membership is free and open to anyone who:

  • Is a citizen of the United States
  • Is a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces whose discharge was other than dishonorable
  • Has suffered a spinal cord injury as a result of trauma or disease which resulted in paralysis of more than one limb. The injury or disease does not need to be service-connected and can have occurred following a veterans discharge or retirement from military service

Paralyzed Veterans of Americas Veterans Career Programprovides FREE employment support and vocational counseling assistance to ALL transitioning service members, veterans, military spouses, and caregivers.

No. In fact, the programs offered by Paralyzed Veterans of America compliment those offered by government programs. PVA offers critical assistance to and oversight of benefits and services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. PVA also helps veterans with catastrophic disabilities who encounter barriers in their communities by empowering them to advocate for their removal. In a time when government services are underfunded, PVA often fills an important void. Without our assistance, many paralyzed veterans would not have proper access to the benefits, services, and rights that they have earned.

How To Protect Yourself From This Scam

  • Do ask for details on a veterans charitys mission, how many service members and families it helps, and how much it spends on programs as opposed to overhead and fundraising.
  • Do get an address, phone number and website for the organization.
  • Do search online for the charitys name and words like scam or complaint.
  • Do check whether it is registered with the appropriate state charity regulator.
  • Do look up reports and ratings from charity evaluators and data resources like those listed below under More Resources.
  • Do get a receipt showing how much youve given. Legitimate charities will give you one. Check it against your credit card statement to make sure you were charged only the amount you agreed to donate.
  • Dont make a donation in cash or by wire transfer or gift card. Scammers prefer these payment methods because they are hard to trace. The safest way to donate is by credit card, which offers the greatest protection for consumers in case of fraud.
  • Dont take a charitys name at face value. Deceptive military charities use words like disabled, healing and heroes in their branding to play on your patriotism and sympathy.
  • Dont mistake a charity appeal that comes in the mail for a bill. Some bogus fundraisers disguise solicitations as invoices, hoping youll think you have to pay.

  • Make Sure Your Money Goes to a Good Place
  • There are dozens, if not hundreds of wonderful military charities dedicated to making the lives of service members, veterans, and their family members or survivors, a little brighter. Many veterans have given more than we as a nation could ever rightfully ask. And its great to be able to give back to our veteran community and show them we appreciate the sacrifices they have made.

Unfortunately, whenever money is involved the door is open for scammers to try and part you from your hard-earned money.

We dont need to cover all the scams and fraudulent military charities out there. This has been done by many sites, including this example of a man who took almost $2 million in cash as a retirement for his work and this person who bilked unsuspecting donors out of over $100 million over seven years.

Our goal is to show you how you can protect yourself when giving to military or veteran charities, and ensure that your intended recipients receive the bulk of your gift.

But technology is now good enough that you can put the power in your hands. You control your checkbook. So take a moment and review the organization before you write a check. Make sure you understand the organizations mission, how much of their money goes to the mission, and that you agree with both of these.
