Automobile And Special Adaptive Equipment Grants

VA Disability 55 Year Old Rule

Can a Veteran Receive Financial Assistance From VA to Purchase an Automobile?

Yes. Financial assistance, in the form of a grant, is available to purchase a new or used automobile to accommodate a veteran or servicemember with certain disabilities that resulted from an injury or disease incurred or aggravated during active military service. The grant may also be paid, if disabilities are a result of medical treatment, examination, vocational rehabilitation, or compensated work therapy provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs .

The grant is paid directly to the seller of the automobile for the total price of the automobile. The veteran or servicemember may only receive the automobile grant once in his/her lifetime.

What Disabilities Must You Have to Qualify for the Automobile Grant?

A veteran or servicemember must have one of the following disabilities to qualify for the automobile grant:

  • loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both feet
  • loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both hands, or
  • permanent impairment of vision in both eyes to a certain degree

Does VA Pay to Adapt a Vehicle?

Yes. Those qualified for the automobile grant, and veterans or servicemembers with ankylosis of one or both knees or hips resulting from an injury or disease incurred or aggravated by active military service may also qualify for the adaptive equipment grant.

The adaptive equipment grant may be paid more than once, and it may be paid to either the seller or the veteran.

What Forms Do You Need To Fill Out To Request An Updated Rating

The forms you need to fill out to request a re-evaluation differ based on where you initially received treatment. For instance, if you received care at a VA or military service healthcare facility, you need only to fill out Form 21-526EZ, which asks for the name of the site where you received treatment so they can be contacted to verify your information.

If, however, you received treatment at a civilian facility, then you will also need to fill out Form 21-4142, which is, in essence, a HIPAA form. This form is required for the authorization of the release of your medical records. It also gives permission for your physicians to confer with the VA.

Typical Symptoms Of Chronic Sinusitis

2021 VA Disability Rates and Compensation

The symptoms of chronic sinusitis might start as a cold or allergy-induced runny nose. You might have a sore throat from all of the nasal discharge and a reduced sense of taste and smell. Difficulty breathing because of your stopped-up nose and pain around your eyes, nose, eyes, and forehead can be enough to put you in bed for days. Most of those symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter cold medicine.

A cold might just affect your throat and nose, but sinusitis affects your sinus cavities. These are open regions in your face that keep your head from being solid bone. As these chambers in your cheeks, behind your eyes, and in your forehead hold an infection, they become inflamed and fill up with fluid. That pressure is what turns into headaches and tenderness. While those kinds of symptoms can heal over time, you should see your doctor if they persist for more than 10 days.

Are There Different Levels Of Disability

Yes for Disability Compensation. For Disability Compensation, the range is from 0% to 100%. A veteran with a 0% rating may have a service connected condition, but it doesnt interfere with normal life functions. A veteran with a 100% rating will have one or more disabilities that significantly interfere with normal life functions. There is a full range between the two, with the majority of Vermonts disabled veterans rated at 10%, 20%, or 30%.

No for Non-Service Connected Pension. Pension is provided only to veterans who the VA determines to be 100% disabled.

How Long Do I Have To Apply

For most claims there are no time limits. Although World War II ended in 1945, World War II veterans continue to apply for disability benefits for the first time. As mentioned above, age has a way of magnifying the severity of both physical and mental conditions.

Even though there is no time limit, however, veterans should still apply as soon as possible. First and foremost, they should receive benefits as soon as they are eligible. Just as significantly, however, disability applications can be more difficult to process over time, as the veteran must prove to the VA that their condition is a result of military service and not injuries that occurred after their separation.

About Va Disability Compensation

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA disability pay is a monthly tax-free monetary benefit for veterans who have service-connected disabilities that limit their participation in work or daily activities.

Veterans who have post-service disabilities related to an injury that occurred during service may also be eligible for disability benefits.

Va Disability For Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the 2nd most common type of cancer in men. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes.

As with other cancers, prostate cancer is caused by cells with abnormal DNA. Abnormal DNA can come from inflammation in the prostate, which can damage cell DNA, or exposure to cancer-causing material, which causes DNA mutations.

Veterans Exposed To Radiation

Top 100 Disabled Veteran Benefits Explained

For veterans who participated in radiation risk activities while on active duty, the following conditions are presumed to be service connected:

  • All forms of leukemia, except chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • Cancer of the thyroid, breast, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, bile ducts, gall bladder, salivary gland, urinary tract, brain, bone, lung, colon or ovary
  • Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma
  • Lymphomas, other than Hodgkins disease
  • Primary liver cancer, except if there are indications of cirrhosis or hepatitis B

To determine service connection for other conditions or exposures not eligible for presumptive service connection, VA considers factors such as the amount of radiation exposure, duration of exposure, elapsed time between exposure and onset of the disease, gender and family history, age at time of exposure, the extent to which a non-service exposure could contribute to disease, and the relative sensitivity of exposed tissue.

What Disability Programs Does The Va Provide

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has two disability programs, which are described below. At the bottom of the page is a chart comparing the two.

Disability Compensation

Disability Compensation is for veterans who have conditions that were caused or aggravated by their service in the military. These conditions cover the full range of human physical and emotional experience. Has your ankle bothered you ever since you twisted it at boot camp? Have your ears rung ever since you spent a year driving a tank in a combat zone? Have you felt anxious ever since going on patrol in hostile territory? The bottom line: If you have a current physical or mental condition, and it is related to your military service, then apply for Disability Compensation. Even if the condition seems minor now, dont wait to apply. When youre 25, that bum left knee may just be a minor inconvenience when youre 55, the early onset arthritis you developed in that knee because of your service may mean you can barely walk. You should apply regardless of your income and regardless of your ability to find work. In short: if the military broke it, the VA owns it.

Non-Service Connected Pension

Secondary Conditions For Service Connection

Many veterans are service-connected on a secondary basis for conditions stemming from an already service-connected condition.

Secondary conditions can include any number of conditions. Some common secondary conditions are:

  • Radiculopathy secondary to back pain
  • Peripheral neuropathy secondary to diabetes mellitus type 2
  • Hypertension secondary to PTSD

How Va Rates Limitation Of Flexion Of The Knee

Generally, VA rates this condition as a musculoskeletal condition based on the range of motion that exists as the veteran moves their knee in that direction. VA looks at the range of motion in degrees rather than the pain caused by the motion.

Limitation of flexion of the knee is rated under 38 CFR § 4.71a, Diagnostic Code 5260, at 0, 10, 20, or 30 percent. The most common rating VA assigns for this condition is 10 percent.

Priority Group 1 For Healthcare

60% VA Disability Rating for Heart Conditions

When veterans apply for VA health care, VA will assign you to 1 of 8 priority groups based on:

  • Your military service history
  • Whether you qualify for Medicaid and
  • Other benefits you may be receiving

Veterans with a 100 percent VA disability rating meet the eligibility requirements for Health Care Priority Group 1, the highest priority. This group includes benefits such as:

  • Hospitalizations, some inpatient services, and preventative care
  • Medical or automotive adaptive equipment
  • Medically related travel benefits
  • Vision care and hearing aids

About Va Disability Ratings

We assign you a disability rating based on the severity of your service-connected condition. We use your disability rating to determine how much disability compensation youll receive each month, as well as your eligibility for other VA benefits.

If you have multiple disability ratings, we use them to calculate your combined VA disability rating. Calculating your combined disability rating involves more than adding up your individual ratings. Thats why your combined rating may be different from the sum of your individual ratings.

Factors That Impact Va Disability Rates For Various Conditions

It helps to know what clinical and functional factors the VA claims processors are instructed to apply to rate diverse conditions consistently and fairly. The following are just a few factors they must consider:

  • Limitation of range of motion, extension, and flexion in many musculoskeletal conditions
  • Evaluation of painful motion
  • Number and frequency of incapacitating episodes the veteran experiences
  • Bilateral factor When disability results from disease or injury of both arms, or of both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, VA combines the ratings for the disabilities of the left and right sides, and 10% of this value is added before continuing with further ratings
  • Chronic, progressive conditions
  • Impairments of dominant vs. non-dominant hands
  • Presumptive conditions Veterans suffering from chronic diseases connected to their active service may be able to win their VA claims by using the service connection by legal presumption.
  • Location and percentage of body area affected such as with skin disorders, scarring, and nerve disorders

In most cases, VA disability rates for conditions that have stabilized over time are not re-evaluated.

Veterans, survivors or dependents who had claims previously denied for any of these respiratory cancers are encouraged to file a supplemental claim for benefits.

  • Asthma diagnosed after leaving the service
  • The following types of cancer:
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • If you, or a loved one served in a qualifying area and suffer from one of the listed conditions, you should apply for benefits as soon as possible.
