One way to approach questions you will want to ask when searching for housing for an adult with a disability is to make a list of concerns. Identify what you or your loved one needs help with. Each option will have different levels of support, so you may have to supplement with other care.
How Do I Become A Shared Living Provider
- Apply online Here
- The Program Coordinator will review the application and contact you
- Once the application is approved, you will be required to fill out a CORI, OIG and RMV background check
- Upon completion and receipt of an approved background check, a home visit will be scheduled to qualify your home
- The Program Coordinator will then determine if you and your home qualify to be part of the program according to DDS regulations.

Becoming A Shared Living Provider
Venture is currently seeking compassionate, supportive caregivers in Central, North Central and Southeastern Massachusetts who are willing to share their homes and lives with an adult with developmental disabilities. Orientation, training, respite care, and a tax-free annual stipend are provided to Shared Living Providers.
- Assist with cultivation of daily living skills
- Develop a relationship with participants based on mutual respect
- Foster community involvement, social development and positive relationship building
- Assist individual in maintaining their relationships with families and or guardian, if needed
- Ensure the overall well-being of the participant and welcome them into the family unit
Caregivers receive orientation, training, respite support, monthly in-home visits with a case manager, as well as a tax-free annual stipend.

Group Homes For Adults With Developmental Disabilities At Scarc
When an individual and their family are exploring the residential option of a group home, there are many questions and concerns:
- For the individual, there may be questions such as What will it be like living there? Will my life completely change? Who will I live with? And, there are more personal questions Can I still have Cheerios for breakfast every morning? Will somebody help me get dressed? Can I go bowling on Saturday morning?
- Families and guardians have concerns about quality of life, safety, and stability.
- Everyone, including the provider, wants a positive, adult living situation that provides an individual with opportunities to grow within a secure and nurturing home environment.
SCARC currently provides group homes for adults with developmental disabilities in twenty-two homes located throughout Sussex County. Most residents are Medicaid eligible and have an individual budget for their supports through the Division of Developmental Disabilities . Residents of the group homes have varying levels of intellectual and physical challenges, and direct support staff are specifically trained in meeting the support needs of these individuals in a residential setting. In order to achieve balance in an individuals life and provide the assistance and supervision that is required, direct support professionals must address global needs:

Living At Home Or In An Accessory Dwelling Unit
Living at home with parents or other family members is an option that many people choose because it is convenient. However, if caregiving duties become too time-consuming and stressful, other options might be better.
It is possible for an adult with a disability to be an independent part of the household if that is the expectation. One way to achieve this is with an ADU. ADUs are becoming more popular due to their accessibility to family support while providing privacy and independence.
An ADU is a smaller, independent residential dwelling unit located on the same lot as a stand-alone single-family home. There are different zoning laws in each locality, so you will need to check whether they are permissible.
Independent Living Services For People With Disabilities
– Crockett Resource Center for Independent Livings Independent Living Services Program helps people with disabilities achieve greater independence in the home and community. Eligibility criteria for this program requires that the applicant has a significant disability who has been diagnosed by a licensed practitioner and resides in Texas.
If you are a person with a disability and need services, assistive technology, or equipment to maintain your independent living, you could be eligible for the following:
- Vehicle modifications
- Other adaptive equipment and assistive technology

Who Is Shared Living For
Any individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or autism who prefers to live in a family-type home, who is eligible for MaineCare services under the Home and Community-Based Waiver, and whose Person-Centered Planning team has determined this to be an appropriate living option.
Developmental Disability Services does not support multiple people with disabilities living in this model unless the people are family members or have a long-standing relationship/friendship where they are clearly indicating their desire to share in this living model. All exceptions to this protocol will need to be approved by the OADS Program Administrator of the district in which the person reside.

Cant Commit To Being A Full Time Shared Living Provider You Can Become A Respite Provider
A Respite Provider receives a paid stipend to:
- Provide respite to Shared Living Providers when they are in need of taking time away from the individual they have living with them. The respite provided may cover the Shared Living Providers vacation, personal or family time.
- Provide respite to individuals who may be in transition from one home to another.
- Provide respite to individuals whose current home situation is being disrupted by an unforeseen emergency or other circumstances.
The Respite Provider can provide respite care to individuals in their homes or if requested in the Shared Living Providers home.
Eligibility Requirements to Become A Respite Provider are the same as outlined for the Shared Living Provider.

Key Federal Housing Initiatives
Key programs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that seek to increase affordable housing for people with disabilities include:
Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities Program. Section 811 is the only HUD program dedicated to producing affordable, accessible housing in the community for non-elderly, very low-income people with significant disabilities.
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. HUDs Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program helps very low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities afford rental housing in the private market. About 1 in 3 households using Section 8 vouchers are headed by a non-elderly person with a disability.
National Housing Trust Fund. The National Housing Trust Fund is a new, dedicated fund that provides grants to states to build, preserve, and rehabilitate housing for people with the lowest incomes.

An Innovative Housing Solution To Better Serve People
We work closely with people and their families to arrange living situations that feel like home. Guided by their interests and needs, individuals are empowered to be part of the decision-making process.
Host families help with everything from meal preparation to medication management to transportation. Like typical families, they engage in social events and community activities. If additional direct care is required, arrangements will be made to support those needs.
Possible shared living arrangements include:
- An individual living with the provider in their home
- An individual and provider renting a space together
- A provider moving into the individuals rented or owned home
As shared living is a long-term relationship, we take great care in finding the right match.
- A telephone conversation with the potential provider to discuss their interest in the program, home life, and work life
- In-person interviews at the potential providers home to review:
- Home environment and neighborhood
- Values, lifestyle, and family structure
- Personal reference checks
- Criminal background checks for everyone living at the home
- Training for certification in first aid, CPR, human rights, fire safety, Positive Behavior Support , and health and wellness
Billing And Payment Information
To be successfully submitted for payment through eMBS, all services must be delivered as specified in the ISP and authorized by the CBDD in the Payment Authorization for Waiver Services system.

Ohio Shared Living has separate daily rates for independent providers and provider agencies.

A Shared Living Provider is someone who opens their home and provides daily support and companionship to an adult with a developmental disability. Share your home and make a difference.
A Provider is a teacher, mentor and friend, helping the person to live a meaningful life at home and in the community.
In exchange for your support and companionship, you will receive a generous tax free stipend, excellent guidance and on-going educational support.
Qualifications include: a home, with an available bedroom, that is accessible to meet the needs of an individual, and Providers must have a valid drivers license and a reliable vehicle.
CPR & First Aid certification are required, and will be provided. Applicants must complete a CORI.

The clients utilizing Shared Living services receive a safe and structured home to live in their own room, the necessary level of support as determined on a case-by-case basis, life skills training to increase independence, and introduction and access to community activities to help them form strong community relationships.

Individuals living with a Shared Living provider help to determine their own goals for habilitation and independence. Additionally, individuals receiving Shared Living services may have a mental health diagnosis and/or severe behavioral impairments that need to be addressed through therapy, behavioral management strategies, or other means that the team deems necessary.
