How Ssdi And Va Compensation Can Work Together
If you have a 100 percent P& T rating from the VA, Social Security will speed up processing of your SSDI claim. To get expedited handling, enter Veteran 100% P& T in the Remarks section of your online application and provide Social Security with the notification letter the VA sent you about your rating.
Regardless of your P& T rating, you may qualify for expedited processing under Social Security’s Wounded Warrior program, which prioritizes claims for veterans who became disabled while on active duty on or after Oct. 1, 2001.
Workers compensation and some other types of public disability benefits can trigger what the SSA calls an offset that reduces your Social Security payments. VA disability benefits don’t affect your SSDI or vice versa if you qualify for both programs, each will pay the full amount to which you are entitled.
Health care coverage
If you get SSDI and VA disability benefits, you can receive medical coverage through both.
SSDI recipients are eligible for Medicare, although in most cases there is a two-year waiting period for coverage to begin. Veterans are eligible for coverage under the military’s Tricare program.

Other Va Disability Benefits

Eligibility Requirements For Concurrent Retirement And Disability Pay
In order to qualify for CRDP, veterans must be eligible for retired pay. If veterans were placed on a disability retirement but would be eligible for military retired pay in the absence of the disability, they may be entitled to receive CRDP. According to VA, veterans may be entitled to CRDP if:
- They are a regular retiree with a VA disability rating of 50 percent or higher
- They are a reserve retiree with 20 qualifying years of service, who have a VA disability rating of 50 percent or higher, and who have reached retirement age*
- They are retired under Temporary Early Retirement Act and have a VA disability rating of 50 percent of higher
- They are a disability retiree who earned entitlement to retired pay under any provision of law other than solely by disability, and they have a VA disability rating of 50 percent or higher
*Note: In most cases the retirement age for reservists is 60, but certain reserve retirees may be eligible before they turn 60. If a veteran is a member of the Ready Reserve, their retirement age can be reduced below age 60 by three months for each 90 days of active service they have performed during a fiscal year.
- A veterans retirement date or
- When the veteran first increased to at least a 50 percent disability rating
*Note: No CRDP is payable for any month prior to January 2004. Prior to 2004, existing laws and regulations prohibited military retirees with service-connected disabilities from receiving both payments.
Service Connection For Uterine Fibroids
If a veteran has uterine fibroids which can be connected to their military service, they may be entitled to compensation. First, however, the veteran must establish service connection. To do so, veterans will need to submit the following:
- A current diagnosis of uterine fibroids AND
- Evidence of an in-service event or stressor which caused or contributed to the veterans uterine fibroids AND
- A nexus which links the veterans in-service event or stressor to the uterine fibroids
To file a claim for service-connection, veterans also need to submit VA Form 21-526EZ. This form can be submitted in person at a Regional Office, online using VAs EBenefits portal, or through an accredited representative.

If you are submitting your claim within 1 year of your discharge date, then your date of eligibility is the same as your discharge date. If you submitted after the one-year mark, then your date of eligibility is usually the first day of the month after your claim is submitted. It is usually the same as the effective date of your condition ratings that can be found on your Rating Decision.

To find the amount payable to a 70% disabled veteran with a spouse and four children, one of whom is over 18 and attending school, take the 70% rate for a veteran with a spouse and 3 children and add the rate for one school child.

When Will You Receive Your Funds
You should receive your funds within 15 days of receiving your award letter from the VA, depending on how you choose to be paid. Checks are sent out at the beginning of the month for the previous months benefits.
Direct deposit authorization helps speed up the process and prevents lost checks. You should receive a direct deposit enrollment form with your award letter.
How To Use The Tables To Find Your Monthly Payment
Find your basic rate
Go to the compensation rates for your disability rating. On the Basic monthly rates table, find the amount for your disability rating and dependent status. This is your basic monthly rate.
Example :If youre a Veteran with a 30% disability rating, and you have a dependent spouse , your basic monthly rate would be $568.05 each month.
Find your added amounts, if any apply
If your spouse receives Aid and Attendance benefits or you have more than one child, you may qualify for additional monthly payment amounts as listed in the Added amounts table.
First, determine your basic rate.
Example :If youre a Veteran with a 70% disability rating, and you have a spouse, plus 3 dependent children under the age of 18, you would start with the basic rate of $1,907.06 .
Next, look at the Added amounts table. Find the amount for children under age 18 .
Since your basic rate already provides payment for 1 child, you would add the rate of $70.00 for each additional child .
If your spouse receives Aid and Attendance, you would also add $130 .
In our example of a Veteran with 70% disability rating, your total monthly payment amount would be:
$1,907.06 basic rate + $70 +$70 +$130 Total $2,177.06
