The mission of the Legal Clinic for the Disabled, Inc. is to empower low-income people with disabilities and the deaf and hard of hearing in the Philadelphia region to achieve inclusion, independence, and justice by providing free, quality legal representation to overcome legal obstacles that would otherwise affect their independence, health, or quality of life.
Challenges Faced In Providing Legal Services For Persons With Disabilities
Cost of legal services: Persons with disability often refrain from engaging in legal aid because of the cost of legal services. They cannot afford it since many disabled people live below the poverty line. The cost of transportation is another reason. They cannot afford the cost of traveling from home to the place of these services. This issue can get resolved by providing free legal services for the disabled with legal aid clinics in all the districts of the states.
Communication issue: The language issue is another major challenge. In most disabilities, disabled people cannot understand the language spoken by the person who is providing the legal aid. To tackle this problem, a sign interpreter should be between the two.
Illiteracy: Most of the disabled community is uneducated and does not know about their legal rights. The solution to this is providing inclusive education to them.

Your Disability Is Not Severe Enough
In order to qualify for SSDI benefits, the SSA should be convinced that your injury is severe enough and will last for at least 12 months or may result to death. Only blind people are exempted from this requirement. Bone fractures caused by acute trauma, such as motorcycle or automobile accidents, are most of the time denied treatment because they are less likely to last for 12 months. Typically, bone fractures can heal for six months. Furthermore, your medical condition must have resulted in extreme limitations to qualify for SSI or SSDI. Thus, one of the common reasons why an applicants impairment is denied is because it is not severe enough.

Each child has an Individualized Educational Program that is approved by the parents and the school.
Discrimination in any post-secondary educational program that receives federal funds is prohibited under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This prohibits discrimination in admissions, access, or programs and benefits like financial aid.

New York State Division Of Human Rights

Thank you to everyone who completed our survey for autistic children.
The results show that 94% of autistic children have been refused an assessment by their Local Authority Children with Disabilities team. Additionally, 80% of those children were not referred for an alternative assessment. 97% of families agreed with us that policies need to change so that autistic children are not excluded from an assessment.
Our survey shows that the social care system is failing children who are on the autistic spectrum. The failure of providing an assessment is having a detrimental effect on their health & well-being.
Policies need to change so that autistic children have the right level of support to manage their individual needs.
