When you get your DMV disabled veteran plates you are not showing off, telling everyone you were in a conflict or that you are a hero. Instead, you are getting something you deserve.
Not only a handy parking spot but respect for the sacrifice you made for your country. As a disabled veteran, you may qualify for one of these plates and do not know it. What follows is all the information you need to know to see if you can get your disabled veterans license plate.
Qualifying conditions
The first step in getting a regular disabled handicap parking permit requires a person to go to their medical doctor. The doctor has to fill out part of the application form telling the DMV that you are disabled and qualify for the permit.
However, for veterans, the Dept. of Veteran Affairs already has your records and will list your disability. All you need to do is go to your nearest DVA office and have a representative verify your disability.

Veterans County Service Offices
All counties with a population of 200,000 or more have a veterans county service office that is:
- staffed by at least one full-time employee and
- report directly to the commissioners court.
In a county with a population of less than 200,000, the commissioners court may maintain and operate a veterans county service office if the commissioners court determines that the office is a public necessity to enable county residents who are veterans to promptly, properly, and rightfully obtain benefits to which they are entitled.

The Fund For Veterans Assistance
The Fund for Veterans Assistance is a special fund in the state treasury outside the general revenue fund. The Fund is composed of money deposited from a Texas Lottery Commission Veterans Assistance game, donations from vehicle registration and drivers license renewals, donations from License to Carry renewals, donations from hunting and fishing license renewals, gifts and grants contributed to the Fund, and the earnings of the Fund.
TVC is authorized to administer the Fund and make reimbursement grants to address the needs of veterans and their families, as determined through veteran needs assessment studies. All grant awards are made through a competitive grant selection process.
TVC annually announces funding opportunities for five different grants including General Assistance Grants, Housing for Texas Heroes Grants, Veterans Mental Health Grants, Veteran Treatment Courts Grants, and Veteran County Service Office Grants.

There are many specialty Florida license plates that you can simply go into the office and receive for your vehicle. However, most military license plates require certain documentation.
The disabled veteran tag requires proof of not only prior military service but also the same documentation that you would need to get your disabled parking permit.
So, because that requirement is needed to get this license plate, you would not need the disabled parking decal that most people have hanging from the rearview mirror.
Find Out If You Qualify
If you’re a WA state vehicle owner who served in any branch of the US armed forces, Reserves, or National Guard and:
- Had an honorable discharge or a medical honorable discharge,
- Have been rated by the Veterans Administration or military service, and
- Are receiving 100% service-connected compensation expected to last for more than 1 year.
You qualify for Disabled American Veteran plates, which are exempt from license fees on 1 vehicle per year. These plates are good for the life of the veteran.

Medical Providers Certification Of Disability
- A licensed physician, surgeon, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or certified nurse mid-wife that has knowledge of the disease and/or disability must complete and sign the Medical Providers Certification of Disability section of your application REG 195.
- A licensed chiropractor may certify the disability of a person who has lost the use of one or both lower extremities, or who has significant limitation in the use of their lower extremities.
- A licensed optometrist, physician, or surgeon who specializes in eye diseases may also complete and sign the Medical Providers Certification of Disability section.
You do not need a Medical Providers Certification of Disability under the following conditions:
Once you have a valid DP placard or DP License Plates, you may park:
- In parking spaces with the International Symbol of Access .
- Next to a blue curb authorized for persons with disabilities parking.
- Next to a green curb for as long as you wish.
- In an on-street metered parking space at no charge.
- In an area that indicates it requires a resident or merchant permit.
In addition to parking privileges, service stations must refuel a disabled persons vehicle at self-service rates unless the service facility has only one employee on duty.

What Are The Criteria To Apply For Disabled Parking
To qualify for disabled parking placards and license plates, an individual must have a physical disability that limits or impairs their ability to walk. Please note: blindness or impaired vision by itself is not a valid criterion to receive disabled parking privileges.A licensed physician must certify that the person meets one or more of the following criteria:
- Cannot walk 200 feet without stopping to rest
- Cannot walk without the use of or assistance from a brace, cane, crutch, another person, a prosthetic device, wheelchair or another assistive device
- Is restricted by lung disease to such an extent that the persons forced expiratory volume for one second is less than one liter, or the arterial oxygen tension is less than 60 mm/hg on room air at rest.
- Uses portable oxygen.
- Has a cardiac condition to the extent that the persons functional limitations are classified in severity as Class III or Class IV according to the American Heart Association leaflet The Functional and Therapeutic Classifications of Patients with Diseases of the Heart .
- Is severely limited in their ability to walk due to an arthritic, neurological or orthopedic condition.

Course Credit For Military Service
An institution of higher education will award to an undergraduate student course credit for all physical education courses required by the institution for an undergraduate degree and for additional semester credit hours that can be applied to satisfy any elective course requirements for the student’s degree program for courses outside the student’s major or minor if the student:
- graduated from a public or private high school accredited by a generally recognized accrediting organization or from a high school operated by the United States Department of Defense and
- is an honorably discharged former member of the armed forces of the United States who:
- completed at least two years of service in the armed forces or
- was discharged because of a disability.
Applying For A Dp Placard Or Dp License Plates
To apply for a DP placard:
- Apply by mail or in office: Complete and sign an Application for Disabled Person Placard or Plates .
- Have a licensed physician, surgeon, chiropractor, optometrist, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or certified nurse midwife that has knowledge of the disease and/or disability complete and sign the Medical Providers Certification of Disability section of your application REG 195.
- Submit applicable fees when requesting a temporary placard.
- Mail the original completed and signed application to the address on the form.
To apply for DP License Plates:
- Complete and sign an Application for Disabled Person Placard or Plates .

Types Of Disabled Permits In South Carolina
In South Carolina, the DMV offers both temporary and permanent disability permits.
If you have a qualifying temporary disability, you can receive a temporary placard.

License Plates And Registration For Vehicles Owned And Driven By Disabled Veterans
A person entitled to veteran specialty license plates may register, for the person’s own use, one vehicle without payment of any fee paid for or at the time of registration except the fee for the license plates.
A veteran is entitled to register, for their own use, motor vehicles under the above exemption if:
- the person has suffered, as a result of military service:
- at least a 50 percent service-connected disability or
- a 40 percent service-connected disability because of the amputation of a lower extremity
An organization may register a motor vehicle and receive this exemption if:
- the vehicle is used exclusively to transport veterans who have suffered, as a result of military service, a service-connected disability and
- the veterans are not charged for the transportation.
License plates issued must include:
- the letters “DV” on the plate if the plate is issued for a vehicle other than a motorcycle and
- the words “Disabled Veteran” and “U.S. Armed Forces” at the bottom of each license plate.
The fee for the first set of license plates is $3. There is no fee for any additional set of license plates.
A person, who receives DV license plates, may receive a disabled parking placard for each set of license plates without providing additional documentation.
Planning A Trip Outside Of Ontario
You may apply for a traveller permit if you are planning to travel outside of Ontario and would like to bring your original accessible parking permit with you.
A traveller permit is issued to current permit holders for use related to travel. The traveller permit must be displayed in the vehicle at a point of departure while the original permit is used by the permit holder during their trip.
Traveller permits are issued for a maximum of 12 months or to the expiry date of the original accessible parking permit .
If you want to use your accessible parking permit outside of Ontario, you should contact the authorities in the location you are travelling to confirm that you can use your Ontario accessible parking permit in that jurisdiction/destination. Always follow the local rules and regulations where you are travelling.

Driving License Renewal Extension for Combat Deployed
Military personnel on active duty can request a Georgia driver’s license/ID card renewal through the mail. Georgia also allows a six-month grace period for a service member whose Georgia driver’s license expires while on active duty outside the state.
Employment Preference
A 5-point credit is extended to war veterans seeking employment with the State of Georgia. A 10-point credit is extended to veterans with a VA service-connected disability rating of 10 percent or more.
High School Diplomas for Certain War Veterans
A veteran who failed to receive a high school diploma due to an interruption of education by service in World War II, Korea, or Vietnam is eligible to obtain the diploma. Apply at the board of education of the school district where the veteran attended high school.
Motor Fuel Service for Disabled Veterans
When a gasoline station offers both full-service and self-service, a station employee shall, upon request, provide full-service at the self-service price to a disabled veteran, provided: 1) the disabled veteran is driving a vehicle bearing Disabled Veteran license plates, and 2) the disabled veteran is not accompanied by a person capable of pumping fuel .

If a Disabled Veteran license plate is properly displayed, the veteran is authorized to park in parking areas designated for persons with disabilities.

An eligible applicant may obtain one free set of Disabled Veteran license plate. No specialty plate, transfer, processing, or replacement plate/tab fees are due delinquent renewal penalty applies.
An eligible applicant may obtain additional Disabled Veteran license plates. Additional plates shall be subject to all registration and personalization fees including registration, processing, transfer, replacement, second plate, reservations, and renewal penalty fees.
An applicant with multiple Disabled Veteran license plates may convert one paid registration to a no fee registration upon surrender of the no fee plate.
To qualify for Disabled Veteran specialty license plates, you must be a Missouri resident who has served in and was honorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.
The Disabled Veteran license plates do not allow parking in disabled parking spots unless they display the wheelchair accessibility symbol.

The Health and Human Services Commission operates the mental health intervention program for veterans that include:
- peer-to-peer counseling
- access to licensed mental health professionals for peer service coordinators and peers

- technical assistance for peer service coordinators, licensed mental health professionals, and peers
- suicide prevention training for peer service coordinators and peers
- veteran jail diversion services, including veterans treatment courts and

Parking Plates And Placards
Disabled parking plates and placards are available for organizations and institutions that provide transportation for persons with disabilities through the Motor Vehicle Department in their state. The requirement for the organization or institution is that they must be a non-profit entity. Any business that either directly or indirectly charges a fee for their services is not eligible.
Temporary parking placards are generally only valid for a short period of time, usually about six months depending on the state. In order to be eligible for a temporary disabled parking placard you must have a physician, or in some states, a physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, chiropractor or podiatrist complete the appropriate medical forms. The medical personnel who completes the form required by the state you want to receive a placard from must also designate the approximate amount of time your temporary disability will last.
Temporary placards expire on the last day of the month and year indicated on them. If, after the date the placard has expired, you are still temporarily disabled, your physician or other qualified medical personnel can re-certify that you are still disabled and you can obtain another placard from your state. Temporary placards are usually red and easily identified by parking enforcement personnel, so it is wise to keep them up to date if you are still temporarily disabled.
