Rebuilding Injured Veterans Lives
When Veterans receive a new specially adapted custom home from HFOT, they are now free to focus on their recovery and returning to their lifes work of serving others.
Many embrace their roles as motivational speakers sharing their stories of perseverance with classrooms and civic groups all over the country. Others go on to start families, go back to school, or take up careers as engineers, law enforcement agents, prosthetic technicians, nonprofit executives, business owners, artists, or VA staff members. HFOT even has a few US Paralympians in its Veteran family. Read below to learn about the many ways that HFOT is Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives.
BRINGING BACK THE BEAT
Army Specialist Steven Baskis always loved music. As a child, his father would take Stevens hands while sitting in his lap and tap them to the beat as they listened to songs by classic artists like The Beach Boys and AC/DC. I really took to the drums, I love the beat, he says.
After high school, he started drifting away from music when he enlisted, and his military career took center stage. In May 2008, Steven lost his eyesight when an explosively formed penetrator detonated next to his vehicle in Iraq, bringing his military career path to a halt.

The Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance are disability income benefits administered by the Social Security Administration that also provide Medicaid and/or Medicare health insurance to eligible individuals. We know that the application process for SSI/SSDI is complicated and difficult to navigate. Nationally, only about 28 percent of individuals who apply for these benefits are approved on initial application, and appeals take an average of one year to complete.

If you are not able to work because of a disability such as mental illness, medical impairment, and/or a co-occurring substance use disorder, paying your rent and mortgage and keeping a roof over your head is difficult. Disability benefits may be critical if you are on the verge of losing your home. If you have already lost your home, keeping up with the paperwork and mailings is almost impossible without a permanent and stable address.

Catholic Charities Offers A Variety Of Affordable Living Options For Older Adults And People With Disabilities
Among our five properties in Kansas City, Warrensburg and Cameron, you can choose downtown living, suburban neighborhoods or rural settings. Amenities include controlled access, on-site maintenance, activities and wellness programs, and nearby shopping. Social service coordinators help residents with questions about insurance, medical bills and benefits.

In-home intensive care management for older adults and people living with disabilities in Ramsey and Hennepin counties, individual care plans, advocacy. Comprehensive in-home assessment to create an individualized care plan, referral and coordination of services in all areas of participants life, advocacy on behalf of the program participant, collaboration with other service providers to coordinate and monitor care, reevaluation of service needs on a regular basis to meet changes in participants life, and network for caregiver.

OPWDD has a few programs that assist individuals with developmental disabilities and their income-eligible families find a home of their choice. The Individual Supports and Services program assists adults with developmental disabilities who wish to live independently with finding and renting an apartment. Huge Projects In The Twin Cities To Provide Affordable Housing For Years To Come

Its a place of hope and possibility.
The now-vacant Gallery Professional Building in downtown St. Paul is now the Salvation Armys newest facility.
There is a great need for shelter, said Major Scott Shelbourn, the Salvation Armys Twin Cities commander. You can drive anywhere downtown, even in these winter months, and youll see people out on the streets.
Dozens of former medical offices in the sprawling structure, along West Exchange Street, are to be converted into affordable care units.
Shelbourn said this will be a multi-year project that will cost roughly $20 million.
Its going to cost a lot of money to get this building to where it needs to be, to do any kind of programming in it, he said.
For the first time, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS got a chance to take a look inside the 108,000 square foot, eight-story building.
Shelbourn said the Salvation Army doesnt want to set up an overnight shelter, where people would check in and leave.
He said he wants spaces for people to live.
What were looking for is long term, kind of transitional housing or some kind of affordable housing, either for singles, or for families, Shelbourn said.
Experts say the need is urgent.
The Minnesota Housing Finance Agency says statewide, there are 240,000 renters making $50,000 or less a year, who are cost-burdened by their housing.
Meaning, they spend 30% or more of their income on a place to live.
But help is on the way on both sides of the Mississippi River.

Housing Choice Voucher Program
Another option for private purveyors of housing solutions in a depressed market is the popular Housing Choice Voucher Program . However, unlike the Privately Owned Subsidized option, this program gives the power of personal preference to the residents of the type and location of housing to be covered, whether that solution be a single-family home, townhouse, or apartment complex. An applicant that applies and is approved for this program has the ability to take their approved voucher and use it to subsidize the rent of participating housing providers, giving choice to the residents and a guarantee to the provider that rent will be paid on time.
Those that participate in the housing choice program can take comfort in knowing that any housing provider that is accepted in the program must provide solutions that are not only within the normally accepted housing codes of an area but the HUDs own standards of housing to meet their health and safety expectations.

Bipartisan Plan For Housing Support For Seniors Disabled And Veterans Still May Not Make It Out Of The Minnesota Legislature
The purpose is to help move people out of homeless shelters and to help transition people being released from treatment facilities.
It is a nearly 500-page bill that contains dozens of issues related to social and health services in Minnesota. Many issues have bipartisan support. But if there is not an agreement between Senate Republicans and House DFLers on the big issues in what is known as the Health and Human Services omnibus bill, many of those smaller agreements are at risk.
Conference committees have been trying to work out differences but legislative leaders have made clear that not all omnibus bills will be resolved by next Sundays adjournment. If agreed-upon sections cant be pulled out into a mini-omnibus or passed individually before session ends, they will be put off for next year.
One of those seemingly agreed-upon issues is a small change to a housing support program that comes with a relatively small price tag but that could help nearly 4,000 low-income senior residents and people with disabilities, including veterans. The purpose is to help move people out of homeless shelters and to help transition people being released from treatment facilities.
The change in the omnibus bill, Senate File 4410, would reduce the cost sharing to 30 percent of monthly payments. It has the same language as bipartisan bills in both the House and the Senate.

Privately Owned Subsidized Housing
Through the privately owned subsidized housing program, apartment and housing locations that are privately owned can apply to provide a solution to their low income applicants by applying a government subsidy to the cost of the rent of a unit, thereby lowering the out of pocket cost of those that wish to reside there. This is a good solution to those owners that find themselves in an demographic area that is facing economic hardship, allowing them to provide quality housing to residents and profit with their own budgeting realities.

Catholic Charities of Chenango County partners with Bassett Community Health Navigation Services Health Home and with Catholic Charities of Broome County Health Home to provide comprehensive care management and care coordination services to New York State Medicaid recipients.
Care Coordination Services assist Medicaid recipients with serious physical health and behavioral health needs to navigate the complex healthcare system that is available to them. Care Coordination offers comprehensive care management, care coordination, individual and family support, level of care transition planning and referral services.

We Offer One Two And Three
One or more person in the household must be at least 18 years or older and have a disability which is expected to be of long-continued and indefinite duration, substantially impedes the persons ability to live independently, and is of a nature that such ability could be improved by more suitable housing conditions.
Households must meet income requirements as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
All rents are subsidized. Eligible households pay no more than 30% of their adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, excluding telephone. Certain deductions are made for elderly status for all household members. After initial occupancy, income will be recertified on an annual basis.
