How Work Impacts Your Disability

Now you know that it is possible to work at least part-time while on disability. But do you know whether or not doing so will disrupt your disability benefits?

The truth is that whether or not things get disrupted depends on the disability benefits you are receiving. For example, if you receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, you can work under the SGA as much as you want. You can earn more than the SGA for a nine-month initial trial period, but if you continue to earn more than the limit, you may lose benefits entirely.

Its a bit different if you are Supplemental Security Income benefits. SSI offers a similar trial period, and you can similarly lose benefits entirely if you earn more than the SGA after the trial is over. But your SSI payment is also reduced by $1 for every $2 that you earn, which occurs both during and after the trial period.

Medicare Coverage If You’re Disabled

We automatically enroll you in Original Medicare after you get disability benefits for two years. However, if your disability results from ALS, Medicare coverage begins sooner, generally the first month you are eligible for disability benefits.

Medicare Part A helps pay for inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. The taxes you paid while you were working financed this coverage. Its provided at no cost to you.

What Is Social Security Disability

Social Security Disability benefits are not the same or even the equivalent as workers comp. We saw above that workers compensation benefits are appropriate for more short-term injuries while Social Security Disability benefits are more appropriate for long-term issues. However, because these two types of benefits are not related to each other it is possible to apply for and receive both concurrently.

The big difference between workers compensation benefits and Social Security Disability benefits is that you can apply for the latter without having to have suffered an on-the-job injury. There are a few criteria which you have to fit to be able to apply for Social Security Disability benefits. These requirements are:

You must be 18 years of age or older
You must not be receiving benefits on your own Social Security
You have to be unable to work due to a medical condition that will at least for at least twelve months
If your medical condition will not least for at least twelve months you can still apply if the condition is expected to end in death
It has been more than sixty days since you were previously denied disability benefits

If you are able to apply for benefits then it is recommended you do so quickly. This is because it takes six months for approval before you will start to see any money and so its best to get started quickly so you get access to those benefits as soon as possible.

How Does Working Impact Ssi Benefits

The rules for working while receiving Supplemental Security Income are different. SSI recipients may work until their income plus their SSI benefits exceed the income limits to qualify for disability payments.

If you work while receiving SSI benefits, your SSA reduces your benefits based on your income. The first $85 you earn as income does not count toward your countable income, provided you receive income from your job and disability benefits.

After the first $85, the SSA deducts fifty cents from every dollar you earn. Therefore, your SSI benefits are reduced by one-half of your earns after deducting the first $85.

If you need to restart your SSI benefits, there is an expedited reinstatement process for a period of five years in this context as well.
