If You Run Out Of Paid Leave
Depending on your circumstances, you may request that sick leave credits be advanced to you to cover the period of your absence. This type of leave request is covered to the limit prescribed in your collective agreement or terms and conditions of employment.
You may also request leave without pay for illness or injury. Refer to Appendix B of the Directive on Leave and Special Working Arrangements for additional information.
Can You Work And Get Disability
Can you work while applying for, or receiving, disability?
Yes, you are allowed to work while receiving Social Security Disability or SSI, and you are allowed to work while having initiated applying for benefits. As long as you follow the rule set in place by Social Security for earned income.
What is the rule?
In the case of a pending claim, i.e. you have filed a disability application, you can do this as long as your earnings do not exceed the earnings threshold for the SGA limit. SGA stands for substantial gainful activity and it corresponds to a specific dollar amount that you cannot exceed.
Going over the limit means being denied
If your gross monthly earnings exceed this amount, you claim will be denied for SGA because it is the social security administrations position that if you can make this amount you are not functionally limited enough to be considered disabled .
This is why we advise individuals who are trying to get their disability benefits to be very careful about engaging in work activity. That doesnt change the fact that people who are disabled sometimes still have to make the attempt to work in order to keep their bills paid.

If you return to work and lose your benefits, you are still eligible for Medicare for at least 93 months after your nine-month trial period.
Supplementary Security Income
The amount of your monthly payment depends on your income. If your income decreases while on SSI, your payments can be increased up until the limit of $841. If you income increases, your payments will be decreased.

The Ticket to Work Program is a federal program designed to help disabled people who receive SSDI return to work. While enrolled in the Ticket to Work program, you will be allowed to maintain your disability benefits for a certain period of time, while also working a regular job.

I Return To Work After An Extended Absence Due To Disability
Accommodation is a fundamental and integral part of the right to equal treatment in returning to work. Depending on what applies to you there are different implications for tax purposes.
If the employee pays the premiums for the long term disability insurance then disability payments are not taxable. If the employer pays for the disability insurance premiums then when the payments are made to the disabled employee they are taxable. The law is more complicated when the premiums are shared between an employee and employer.
