Program #: Supplemental Security Income Benefits
SSI has the strictest eligibility requirements of any program. But if you didnt work 5 of the last 10 years full-time or are 65+ with few assets, apply for SSI.
SSI pay amounts vary up to a max of $841/month per person or $1,261/month per couple.
SSI medical eligibility requirements are the same as those for SSDI. But again, you must have very low income to qualify. It is also important to have very few financial assets. Your total household income cannot be more than $1,350/month and you must own less than $2,000 in financial assets and resources . There are some exceptions to the asset rule: the SSA wont count your house, the land it sits on, one vehicle, your wedding ring, and some household goods.
If youre in the process of selling property, speak to a New Jersey disability attorney before applying for SSI.

New Jersey Public Sector Employee Program
Thomas Edison State University is proud of our unique partnership with the New Jersey state, county, local government and governmental authorities.
Under the NJ PSEP program, public employees receive special tuition rates and opportunities for individual advising and onsite group information sessions. Our undergraduate and graduate programs prepare public employees for career change, advanced study at the graduate level and professional growth. Whether you are working for the state or in one of New Jerseys municipalities, now you can earn your college degree, anytime, anywhere at a special rate.
Personally, one of the reasons I chose Thomas Edisons John S. Watson School was because of its affiliation with the New Jersey Urban Mayors Association. As the business administrator for an urban city, I was afforded the opportunity to network with others in my field while gaining insight into various policy initiatives that are relative to the city and state.
One benefit of Thomas Edisons generous credit acceptance programs for both my bachelors and masters degrees was that all of the experience I gained from work, EMT classes, my state licensing classes, were all eligible to be rolled into my degree programs. When all of my credits transferred, the journey to success was seamless.

Please Answer A Few Questions To Help Us Determine Your Eligibility
If you live in New Jersey and have a disability that prevents you from working, there are several benefits you can apply for, depending on how long your inability to work will last. For short-term disabilities — those that last up to six months — the State of New Jersey provides temporary disability insurance . For disabilities that last longer than one year, you can apply for Social Security disability or Supplemental Security income . Even though these are federal programs, the disability determination and appeal process can vary from state to state. Also, some states, including New Jersey, provide supplemental payments to people who receive SSI.

Substantial Gainful Activity Income Levels
In determining if work is substantial gainful activity, the New Jersey Social Security Administration averages income according to rules that consider the nature of the work, the period of time worked, and whether the SGA level changed during the time the claimant worked.
The SGA level, which was $300 per month during all of the 1980s and $500 per month from 1990 until July 1999, when it was raised to $700, is becoming considerably more generous than it used to be because of cost-of-living increases that have been applied beginning with the year 2001. For example, for the year 2010, average countable earnings of more than $1,000 per month show that work was substantial gainful activity.
You can find the substantial gainful activity amount for the current year at www.ssa.gov/cola/.
Program #: Social Security Disability Insurance Or Ssdi
You may qualify for SSDI only if you worked 5 in the last 10 years full-time at a job where you paid FICA payroll taxes. You are eligible for benefits if a doctor says your condition will last at least 12 months or result in death. If your condition improves enough for you to work again in less than 12 months, you cannot qualify.
Some people who dont get SSDI are service-industry workers, union members and federal or state employees. If you stopped working more than 5 years ago, you also wont qualify for SSDI. Thats because your coverage lapses if you stop paying premiums for 60 continuous months.
- You must be 18-65 to get SSDI benefits.
- If you already get some regular Social Security payments or retired, you also cannot qualify for SSDI.
It takes the SSA 3-5 months to review every SSDI claim. Theres also a required 5-month waiting period before you can get benefits. Thus, we recommend applying for state New Jersey TDI disability benefits first. The SSA approves 1 in 5 or 20% first-time SSDI claims for benefits. In fact, only 35% of all SSDI applicants eventually get benefits.
TIP: To improve your claim, get a New Jersey disabilitylawyer to help you file. They work on contingency, so you owe $0 until after claim approval.

What Other Income Could Reduce Your Ssdi Payment In New Jersey
Any disability benefits you receive from a private long-term disability insurance policy will not affect your SSDI benefits. Likewise, Supplemental Security Income and Veterans Administration benefits will not impact your SSDI amount. However, if you receive any government-regulated disability benefits, that could affect your SSDI amount. The Social Security Administration will reduce your SSDI or other benefits if the amount in SSDI plus the amount from government-regulated disability benefits exceeds eighty percent of the amount you earned before you became disabled.

Grid Rules And Approval Over 50
People who are over age 50 applying for Social Security benefits are also eligible for a special form of approval: Grid rules. This is a process where disability evaluators look at your age, education level, severity of disability, and work history in a yes/no manner to quickly establish eligibility for SSDI benefits. For example, if you have no high school degree, no transferable skills that could be used at a new job, a severe disability that keeps you from performing even light work, and you’re age 50 or older, you could be approved under the SSA’s grid rules.

Student Earned Income Exclusion
SSI has rules called exclusions that let you make some money without having your SSI benefits go down or stop. The Student Earned Income Exclusion is a major exclusion: it lets students earn up to $2,040 per month, and up to $8,230per year, without having those wages be part of their countable income!
To qualify for the SEIE, you must be under 22, working, and regularly attending school. That usually means you have to go to school more than:
- 8 hours a week for college students
- 12 hours a week for grades 712
- 1215 hours a week for employment training
If you drop out of school, you will not qualify for the SEIE, and your SSI benefits will be smaller than they would be if you stayed in school. Stay in school! You get more money thanks to the SEIE, and when you graduate, youll get a higher paying job thanks to your degree.
You make $1,000 per month at a summer job and during the school year, you make $400 each month at a work-study job. Combined, you make a total of $6,600 for the year. Since the money you make doesnt go over the monthly and annual limits for the SEIE, your SSI benefits dont go down at all.
New Jersey Temporary Disability And Family Leave Insurance
New Jersey Temporary Disability Benefits is a division of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. This program provides a cash benefit to those who temporarily cant work due to an illness or injury that is not work related.
If your employer has a state plan you’ll apply online, and if they have a private plan from an insurance company your employer will instruct you how to apply. The program also provides paid maternity or paternity leave for a worker to bond with a new child, or medical leave to take care of an ill family member or one who has been exposed to a communicable disease.
To qualify, you need to have made payments into the program, and also meet gross earning requirements . The employee contribution rate is currently at 0.47% of an employees taxable wage base. The payroll deduction to pay these cannot exceed $649.54 per year. An eligible employee is then paid 85% of their average weekly wage with a maximum of $903 per week.

Plans To Achieve Self
Usually, if you have too many resources or too much income, you stop qualifying for SSI. A PASS is a way to go over these limits without losing your benefits.
To set up a PASS, you must qualify for SSI, have a specific work goal, and have expenses that you need to pay to reach your goal, such as school tuition, transportation, books, and services. You must also show that after you start putting money into your PASS, youll still have enough money left over to pay for your basic living expenses.
Once your PASS is set up, any money you put into it doesn’t count as income or resources for SSI. In this way, a PASS lets you earn more and save more without having your SSI benefits go down. You can also put unearned income into your PASS, which means that you can start saving even if you dont have a job yet. Note: You cannot put your SSI benefits into your PASS.
